Some people look forward to retirement. All they dream of is the day that they no longer have to show up for work. John Thornton, 74, is not one of them. John is the President of The Thornton Agency, an insurance company based in Parsippany, New Jersey. John is not planning on hanging up his hat or retiring his briefcase any time soon. He is having way too much fun!
Speaking with John is a joy. He has a really down to earth attitude toward work ethic and the value of getting up – dressing up and showing up in the workplace. “I enjoy what I am doing. I enjoy coming to work and I feel that I still have something to contribute and to offer. I’d like to continue in this capacity as long as I feel that I am still able to make a difference and add value. I plan to re-evaluate things when I’m around 80.”
One might say that a positive attitude comes easier to John than most. His Mother, Astrid Thoenig, lived to almost 104 years young and was still showing up and holding down the full time position of office manager in his company up until a year ago. When she turned 100, her story was featured on several new stations and articles all over the world. Astrid believed that staying current with the times was a requirement. She was not quick to tell people her chronological age- not so much a secret- it was just the way she lived. People thought she was much younger than she was. John has no doubt that the way his Mother lived her life contributed to the quality of her later years. He is grateful that he was able to provide the place for her to participate and to enjoy the benefits of her contribution!
John doesn’t really claim to have a specific philosophy about life. However, when asked about how he lives life- it is clear he practices a deep wisdom. “I plan to stay active and engaged as long as possible.I want to be able to enjoy life on an ongoing basis. I’d like to plan some aspects of the future, but live fully on a day by day basis.” Up until recently, he was still flying planes and riding motorcycles. He is still an active and avid skier and loves horseback riding and whitewater rafting. John likes high adrenaline sports and activities. John lives the way it makes sense to him. He stays active and follows his joy and his interests!
